What is a calorie deficit?

A calorie deficit is when the number of calories you consume is less than the calories burned, leading to weight loss. Sounds simple, right?

Well, actually, creating a calorie deficit is much harder and maintaining it for an extended period of time is not feasible.

Firstly, most people obtain a calorie deficit by strict dieting which leads to them feeling hungry and lethargic, basically fed up and hangry. No fun!

Secondly, studies show that when you start to lose weight, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy (calories), undoing all your hard work. No fair!

The best way to get your metabolism working for you, not against you, is to maintain a healthy diet full of all the nutrients your body needs so it does not think a famine is coming and start holding onto fat.

Also, try intermittent fasting to keep your hormones in check and use carbohydrates in a way that helps your body work more efficiently.

Sounds too complicated? Actually, working with a nutrition coach can help you to integrate this way of eating into your own lifestyle, making it a lifelong habit, not a fad diet.
